In the article Evolution and Creationism in America 's Classrooms: A National Portrait, Berkman gives the national laws and statistics of how much evolution is taught in classrooms and how evolution is approached in the classroom. Berkman suggest that the amount of time spent on evolution is based on teacher to teacher. Statistics show that a creationist teacher spends less time on the topic of evolution than one who is not a creationist. “Of teachers surveyed, 17% did not cover human evolution at all in their biology class, while a majority of teachers (60%) spent between one and five hours of class time on it.” (Beckman, 2008).Generally teachers and the school system have to be cautious when presenting this material to their class because of the student’s parents and the community causing a big up roar. Scientist expose evolution of being the only true thing taught in a classroom where as everything else is based off of rules that someone else made.
The board of education for our school districts are giving the best possible way to approach these situation with the education of evolution. They do not want to entirely dismiss it because of the many classes such as biology that would need this type of information to succeed into further classes and also help the world progress with the technology needed for more discoveries. The teaching of evolution cannot be dismissed but it also cannot be forced upon the student. The Board of Education is trying to find a stable way to balance these two together.
