Regarding the Effect the Death Penalty Has on Our Nations Economic State and Proposal of Complete Abolishment

The death penalty has been present in our nation since it was founded, having been brought over by Britain when we were colonized. It has been a natural part of our society for over 237 years, and its effects have been drastic. There are several matters regarding the morals and economic effect of the death penalty on our society. These often result in matters that are arguable for the death penalty to remain active, but these matters would be completely eliminated and taken care of if the penalty is to be abolished. I propose the complete abolishment of the death penalty in the United States for 3 important reasons: 1) Executions take a staggering cost from tax payers 2) Execution itself is a violation of the Hippocratic Oath taken by all physicians and 3) the death penalty often takes the life of falsely convicted men which reflects badly on our nation as a whole.
Now, as you should already know, our nation has been in debt for over 200 years. In 1991 as a whole the United States owed over 3,000,000,000,000 dollars in debt, this has more than Quadrupled in the past 22 years. Each death penalty case costs taxpayers $2.3 million in Texas alone. This is triple the amount of locking someone in a cell in a high security prison for over 30 years. Now, on average there are 3,123 people placed on death row every year. If we were to imagine all states with the death penalty spend the same amount, on each case as Texas, then that adds up to about 7,182,900,000. Once again this is implying we all spend the same amount on each person placed on death row, but we indeed do not, in some states it’s higher than this, and in other states it’s lower.
